Alistair Inglis

Hello, I am Alistair the owner of Fortis Strength, Rehab and Conditioning and this is my story as to how I became a Physiotherapist and Strength and Conditioning coach/ personal trainer.

My Interest in Strength and Conditioning started in highschool when I was 12 years old in Maths class, or at least when I was supposed to be doing Maths. You see, Maths class was where the Biweekly Arm Wrestling tournament took place. I remain the undefeated champion, but this was not without challenge. In the class was a European champion who had funded coaching, including strength and conditioning coaching from the Scottish Institute of Sport for his sport. Over time my friend became increasingly hard to beat and I was getting closer and closer to being overthrown as the Mathematics Arm Wrestling Champion. It became obvious what I needed to do - I needed to get strong. I joined my local gym immediately.

This is where I found my passion. I loved the process of strengthening and conditioning the body. I began to experience how it became possible to strengthen and condition the body to make it fit enough to tolerate the ever increasing demands that were placed on it.

Over time I found powerlifting; where I have since set several records and began to get more and more involved in the wider community. I started coaching at local lifting clubs and beginner workshops. My education followed a similar road by completing a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science.

Over time I picked up a few injuries and I struggled to find a rehab professional who was able to help me; many told me to stop doing the things I loved to do or massaged me, which felt good but did nothing to increase my ability to meet the stresses and strains I was experiencing as a result of my sport.

This is when I began to develop an interest in rehabilitation. I continued my education by completing another degree, this time a BSc in Physiotherapy, and began working in the NHS specialising in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. My sole aim was to develop the skills and expertise needed to become the physiotherapist I needed to see - one who had actual knowledge of strength and conditioning and exercise and can help to properly build your body up to overcome injuries and increase the overall capacity of demand your body can tolerate. Over time I have become that physiotherapist - I help to fix pain and injuries and enhance long term performance, rather than provide quick short-term feel-good treatments - and founded Fortis.
